We are in the season of planting vegetable gardens.
One of my favorite gardening books is "Carrots Love Tomatoes" by Louise Riotte.
This book began my love affair with radishes.
Radishes were never my preferred choice for anything other than a carved garnish. Never savoured the flavor . . . . .
Then, I started to grow them.
You have to respect a vegetable that works in a symbiotic relationship with others. The radish not only 'plays nice,' it repels the striped cucumber beetle & the two-spotted spider mite.
They grow well with peas, cucumbers, squash, beans, beets, spinach, melons, carrots, parsnips, tomatoes, but not with anything in the cabbage family. Leaf lettuce sweetens the radishes flavor.
When it is time to pick the radish it will heave itself out of the soil (if the soil is light enough).
Green beans protect eggplants from the Colorado potato beetle.
Cucumbers do not like aromatic herbs and potatoes. They do like some shade.
The list of benefits from companion planting is endless.
Growing food is amazing !
The outdoor classroom is an awesome teacher ! There is so much to learn !
Cause and effect ?
When the rain and sun work on a seed, the plant can flourish.
If we are really able to observe what is happening, over time , as with all things, it reveals it's true nature . . . it's heart
Bhadra Kali, your blog is lovely! I'll return here many times to sink my toes in your pungent dirt. Much love, Mata Laxsmi
